Marriage 27 October 1804.
In presence of William Rickard (a regular witness for events) and Thomas Jose
Above from Courtney records, CFHS, Truro
Died in 1st Quarter of 1850
I have my suspicions that John came from Sunrising ( now under a huge clay pit). This was right on the border of St Enoder and St Stephen in Brannel parishes. I have a copy of the tithe map which shows the parish boundary as running right to the property boundary - and, with changes in boundaries, or convenience, I wonder if John was registerd as St Stephen parish at birth - despite the later claim on censuses that he came from St Enoder.
Address at death was Sunrising.
There were several Jose's in St Stephen Parish at the time - including a Jane Jose, who had a child christened 3 march 1774 - christened Jonathan.
That Jane is the one Familysearch reckon is the parent! I will note here that it seems this Jane was baptised 1 June 1750 in Roche. Parents James and Ann....
James Jose married Ann LAWRENCE 10 JUN 1749 in Roche. The only James Jose baps I can see are 1717 in St Stephenfather Robert, and another in 1724 in Kenwyn, father James.
John listed as age 74 at burial - March 1850, putting year of birth to 1776 or so.
1841 census-

Sunrising,1,John Jose,66,,Ag Lab,In county, <-- This is John
,,Jane Jose,,65,,In county,
Note: Phillmore marriages do not list any other Jose marriages prior to 1804. This seems a little odd.
Note also that the IGI does not mention the marriage of John and Jinifer - seems that not all St Enoder records are there! |
| Note | Another interesting possibility is Helland, near Bodmin.
A quick IGI hunt shows a John of the right age there - and also a Thomas, christened 1780. There is a Thomas as a witness at the marriage of John....
The main negative against this is the Sunrising connection, which is more promising, and also that the parents of that John were Henry and jinifer - neither name is repeated by John for his own children - which would be the usual custom.
But - there is a marriage in St Enoder for a Jenifer Jose to an Edward Renouden in 1813 and there is a Jenifer Jose baptised in St Teath 1785 parents being Henry and Jenifer!!
It is looking very interesting!
One of the witnesses to that marriage is an Arthur (possibly) - maybe the one in St Enoder churchyard?
Edward Renouden/Renowden and Jenifer on 1841 census -

which is Perranzabuloe parish
and presumably Jane/Jenepher etc in 1851 -

Hubby is listed further up the page with various kids. So this lady is a Helland girl too...birth around 1785.
Her baptism is 8 May 1785, St Teath parish, parents Henry and Jennifer, which looks like the same folks as the Helland John.
No Joses in Helland on 1841 census....nor St Teath. |

John 1773 Gwennap pars Peter and Sarah
John 1777 Gunwalloe pars Francis and Jane
John 1778 Helland pars Henry and Jane
|
| Note | There is a burial for an Elizabeth Jose in St Enoder, 28 Dec 1802. Perhaps some connection? |
| Note | OK going to see what I can find for the various Johns - see who we can elimintate.
John Jose, bapt 22 Jun 1777 Gunwalloe, parents Francis and Jane - seems to marry Jane Murrish
John, bapt 7 Jun 1778 Helland, parents Henry and Jane
John, bapt 22 Mar 1772 Gwennap, pars William and Ann
John, bapt 20 Nov 1773 Gwennap, pars Peter and Sarah --> we can eliminate him. Dies in 1776 and his "replacement" John is born 1785
The only John on the 1841 census is mine....
1790 on marriages -
6 Feb 1790 Ruan Lanihorne
10 Feb 1795 Constantine
15 Jan 1798 Breage
25 Jan 1800 Gwennap
13 Aug 1801 St Gennys (Groom from St Juliott) --> the 1770 birth?
27 Oct 1804 St Enoder (my John)
9 Mar 1805 Gerrans
4 Aug 1810 Gwennap (see COPC db)
28 Nov 1814 St Breward (States wit hconsent of parents - so must be a young person)
26 Dec 1820 Constantine |
| Note | What about Arthur Jose, buried in St Enoder? Birth around 1785 apparently.
Baptised 7 Jul 1784, Bodmin parish, parents Arthur and Bridgett, so different parents to the Helland John, which scuppers one of my theories.
Married Jane Francis in 1815.
Buried 1831 aged 46 of Penscawn. So birth confirmed abt 1785 |
| Note | The Thomas Jose from Helland has parents Henry and Jinefer. Bapt 9 Apr 1780 at Helland
There is a Thomas buried in Helland in 1781 (14 Jul 1781) which could be him I suppose, but the burial simply states buried in woollen - and no age or parent is given as would be usual for young children. |
| Note | Sue has come across a Sampson Jose buried 15 March 1685, which seems to be the first Jose in St Enoder. |
| Note | The marriage of Jenifer DAVEY and Henry JOSE took place in Helland on 19 Oct 1777.
So one could imagine a child born soon afterwards being baptised a year or two later....
The Helland John really does seem to be becoming the obvious choice! |
| Note | But, bear in mind the lack of any Henry as a name for a child of John. With local naming traditions, I would expect a Henry in there. Not a certainty but something which is usually seen....
But James (son of John) uses the name Henry for his second son (first named John after his father, then Henry then Thomas, which may also be a family favourite!) |
| Note | Just for interest, here are the entries in the COPC database for Jose baptisms with a Henry as the father and mother as Jane or Jenifer etc 1777 to 1800 -
John 1778 Helland
Thos. 1780 Helland
Thomas 1782 Blisland
Jennifer 1785 St Teath --> married Edward Renouden

|
| Note | It is puzzling that John was noted as a Yeoman at the time of his marriage (although that seems to be the description for most of the entries!) - and he signed the register in his own (rather neat) hand....
Yet later he is a labourer.
Edit: All entries state Yeoman unless there is some occupation such as carpenter there. So we can't read anything into the Yeoman entry. The handwriting is still puzzling though....
|
| Note | We can at least rule out John Jose, son of Peter and Sarah baptised 1773 in Gwennap who dies 1776
Likewise their other son named John, baptised 1785. |
