| Marriage | Poor entry - November looks like the month. Marriage after Banns. Witnesses were Lavinia Stribley and Elijah Solomon.
Both bride and groom made their mark. |
| Burial | Age 66 years. |
| Note | Presumably the daughter of Josiah Peters and Sarah, listed in 1851 census for Brannel? Looks promising!
Lower Trelion
6 - PETERS Josiah, head, mar, 56, miner tin, St Agnes; Sarah, wife, mar, 56, miner wife, St Agnes; Ruth, dau, u, 18, mine labourer, Perranzebula
Per IGI, only one Ruth Peters listed around the right time - christened 14 Feb 1835, St Agnes. Perents Josiah and Sarah.
Per the 1891 census return for St Enoder, Ruth Stribley (nee Peters) was living at Quarry Cottage along with the following members of her family-
William T Stribley, her son, aged 19
Ellen Stribley, her daughter, aged 17
Richard Stribley, grandson, aged 15
Charley Stribley, grandson, aged 12
James Pinch, son in law, aged 24
Ruth Pinch, daughter, aged 34
James H Pinch, grandson, aged 8
William T Pinch, grandson, aged 2
Josiah Pinch, grandson, aged 2weeks.
Acording to the census, Quarry Cottage appeared to be between Resurrance Farm and Goonabarn Farm. To my knowledge, there was nothing there now, so I spoke to Mr Ross Wimberley, the farmer at Resurrance. He remembers the Quarry Cottage still standing up to the mid 1970's.
The location was correct - OS map 200 grid ref SW 891543.
The site is now marked only by two granite gateposts. Stepping through them, there is a rough outline of the original cottage and several low sections of stone which must have been the original walls. The entire area is covered in rubble. The outline and remains of the garden walls are still quite obvious.
The cottage was very small in floorspace - how 10 people could have lived there is beyond belief!
No entry for Ruth Peters in Perranzabuloe 1841 census.
But, in St Agnes -

,,Sarah Peters,Wife,M,,56,Miners Wife,St Agnes Cornwall,,
,,Ruth Peters,Dau,U,,18,Mine Labourer,Perranzebulo Cornwall,,
Which lists Ruths place of birth as Perranzabuloe.
Note that St Agnes and Perranzabuloe are somewhat complicated.
Until 1846, St Agnes was often seen as part of Perranzabuloe. At that date, St Agnes was considered a seperate Ecclesiastical parish. So the Perranzabuloe/St Agnes birth info is not an issue. |
| Note | I believe there is another brother - Hugh Peters.
He is mentioned on the St Agnes OPC pages.
baptism 14 Feb 1835 Hugh? Peters Parents Josiah and Sarah
Or, quite likely, this is a mis-transcript of Ruth! The entry on the OPC page has question marks to indicate the OPC was unsure.
Or is it?
Because in the 1851 census, living next door to Ruth and her parents is -
Lower Trelion,James Soper,Head,M,37,,Farmer 15 Acres,Veryan Cornwall,,
,,Jane Soper,Wife,M,,32,Farmers Wife,St Stephens Cornwall,,
,,Hugh Peters,Lodger,U,25,,Miner,St Agnes Cornwall,,
Age is a little out though to be honest.
21/08/2010 I have looked at the parish reg and the entry does look like Ruth!
It is entry 442 in the parish register. A comparison with other entries does indicate that the vicar did write his G in a way which could be that used in the name of this child and the R/H is often poor.
The problem is that the baptism I have down for Ruth is the one which could be Hugh!
Looking now for either Hugh or Ruth elsewhere in the register. No sign of any Peters entries in Perranzabuloe for the 1832 - 1836 period.
OK, there is an entry in St Agnes parish bapts 24 Dec 1826 (which matches the age for Hugh according to 1851 census) entry no 308, which gives parents as Walter and Thomasin. So looks like Hugh isn't the same family as Ruth. |

| Note | Horatio is like the invisible man! No sign on 1891,1901 or 1911 census....
I suspect Horatio and Richard are one and the same chap. H disappears from 1891 census, but R appears from nowhere!
1911 has a Richard and Minnie (the ones with dau called Mona) and there is a record for Horatio marrying a Minnie Trebilcock (see Charles Stribley record for more notes on this).
