Note
Although the 1881 shows her as a widow, the 1871 seems to disaqgree - John Thos Leach 15 Mary Leach 7 Sarah Ann Leach 42 Henry Pilkington 40 The census clearly shows Henry pilkington as the head of household and unmarried. It shows Sarah Ann Leach as unmarried and listed as a housekeeper! Even more interestingly, the 1861 shows - Sarah Ann Leach as Head of household, unmarried Henry Pilkington is also listed, but as a boarder - again unmarried. With the first name of John Thomas Leach's father being Henry, could it be that Henry Pilkington was actually the father I wonder?? Strange how the family of Sarah Ann continued to grow, yet she was unmarried and good old Henry remained there - first as boarder, then as head of household! Hmmm.... The research done by the Bird family states that John Thomas lists his father as Henry Leach, occupation being clogger. Can you guess what Henry Pilkington's occupation was? Yep, a clogger! Note
Looking at the 1851 census, there is a Sarah Leach, age 22, daughter of James and Sarah living at Waterhead Mill, Oldham, Lancs. Household - Household Members: Name Age Ann Leach 26 James Leach 53 Jane Leach 17 Robert Leach 20 Sarah Leach 61 Sarah Leach 22 Ann Taylor 24 Hannah Taylor 22 The only snag is that the Sarah mentioned is listed as born in Oldham, Lancs. Age doesn't fit either. However, there IS a Sarah Ann Leach listed as born abt 1830. Listed as sister of head of household - 83 Lower Place, Castleton Mary Leach Head Unmarr? 26 Card ....? Cott(on) Rochdale May say Widow? Edmund Leach Son 4 Castleton Sarah Ann Leach Sister Unmarr? 21 Reeler? Aspinall Curate Register: Baptisms 1824 from the Bishop's Transcripts, Page 113, Entry 899 Source: LDS Film 1545793 and Edmund's birth is probably - LEACH Edmund 1846 Castleton Further Rochdale Lancashire CF/4/415
Note
Noting that Sarah Ann Leach lists herself as a widow in 1881, I thought a search for the death of a Henry pilkington may be interesting. Sure enough - Sept qtr, 1878, there is a death for a Henry Pilkington! Rochdale 8e 53 aged 48. It would be very interesting to see the death certificate for him - see who reported the death and their connection. Although the above seems the most likely candidate for the death of Henry, there is also one other which could fit the bill - Sept qtr 1879 haslingden 8e 94 Henry aged 47. This was Henrys place of birth, so it is possible. The only reason I am questioning the first death report is that Henry was apparently alive at the marriage of John Thomas on 19th August 1878. However, he could have died between then and the end of the Sept quarter. It would seem most logical that he died in Rochdale if he was living there.

It is Joseph. On the 1861 census, John Thomas Leach is living with Joseph and Jane Webster and listed as nephew A quick update (16 Nov 2016) Father was John - which ties in with my thoughts of John and Mary as parents of Jane.
